FACILITY NEWS

Upper Dublin residents voted in favor of the School Board's decision to build a new Upper Dublin High School. The future design, as part of a new athletic wing, currently includes a "stretch" pool and features a movable bulkhead to allow separate diving and swimming activities. In addition, specifications include a spectator area, locker rooms, offices, storage, lobby and public restrooms. The current competitive pool design is appropriate to meet the needs of Upper Dublin's substantial scholastic and community indoor competitive swimming & diving programs. The inclusion of an expanded pool facility that offers a warm-water environment will maximize the community-oriented value of this facility (outlined below).

The current Upper Dublin High School pool will be intact for the 2007-2008 season. Construction phasing for the new UDHS will require demolition of sections of the current school including the pool facility in the first phase initiating in May 2008. The phasing is strongly advised by the construction management firm that was hired upon passage of the referendum. The Upper Dublin Swimming & Diving Foundation has been participating in an effort to sort out design options for the new natatorium, over the past year and a half, as part of a liaison group consisting of community members, Township and District representatives.

Now that the new phasing plan appears to be the way forward, UDSD, Township, UDAC and the UDSDF are faced with the task of assuring that an alternate facility is in place for 2008-2009 to assure minimal disruption to aquatics programs. An effort has been initiated to investigate potential options and determine the optimal solution. Could this happen at OJR?
